Lubdhak
Synopsis
This unique way of life is reserved for the lower middle-class population, who may not thrive but somehow manage to persevere. Their resilience in the face of daunting challenges is indeed remarkable, and they carry on without dwelling on regrets.
This very theme is vividly depicted in literary works like “Lubdhak.” The distinguished author Nabarun Bhattacharya skillfully employs the symbolism of dogs in this play to represent the struggles endured by the common lower middle-class individuals. The collective outcry of those who have been pushed to their limits by immense suffering becomes a formidable force, shaking the very foundation beneath the governor’s lofty position. As this grassroots movement gains momentum and takes flight, the governor’s aggression escalates. However, the once-subdued oppressed individuals now confront the governor with remarkable courage and an unwavering resolve.
Through his masterful play, Nabarun Bhattacharya uses the metaphor of dogs to poignantly symbolize these individuals. The character ‘Badami,’ a dog, emerges as a symbol of solace and refuge for the downtrodden working class. Badami’s character ignites a potent movement that transcends cities, villages, and the societal barriers that obscure the facade of civilization at society’s fringes. The writer effectively underscores that those who underestimate the strength of ordinary people are destined to falter.
